St Tropez is the number one yachting destination along the famous Cote d’Azur coastline and high on the list of places to visit in the whole of the Western Mediterranean. This tiny fishing village was transformed after the 1956 film starring Brigitte Bardot ‘And God Created Woman’ was filmed here. Soon afterwards the tourists arrived desperately seeking the same lifestyle. Today even though St Tropez still attracts the rich and famous, this destination should be visited on any Western Mediterranean yacht charter. Due to the popularity of this destination you need to reserve your berth in the marina in advance; and even then due to the limited space you may have to anchor outside of the harbour. If this is the case you can still dinghy into the harbour to enjoy exploring the town or to enjoy a glass or two of excellent locally grown Vins de Provence on an evening.
The village itself retains all of the charm of a bygone era with narrow cobble stoned back streets filled with tiny shops selling embroidered cotton linens, boutique clothes shops, and excellent patisseries selling freshly baked croissant and French bread. You also have an excellent selection of French cafes selling delicious French coffee and excellent snacks and pastries. Shopping is a real treat in this delightful village.
If you have time you may like to visit the excellent Annonciade Museum, which exhibits paintings from 1890 to 1950. The tiny fishing village of St Tropez has been one of the most active centres of ‘avant-garde’ painting at the beginning of the 20th Century, thanks to Paul Signac who, onboard his ship l’Olympia, discovered this little fishing harbour in 1892. He fell under the spell of the place, bought a house, named la Hune, which he turned into his art studio and then invited many other painters to join him: Matisse, Cross, Derain, Marquet.
Artists favoured this lovely fishing village due to the outstanding reflective light, which they portrayed in their art works.
Along the harbour wall are numerous excellent restaurant, cafes and bars, all looking out across the tiny road straight at the superyachts that are all moored stern to the dock. This is a great location just to sit and people watch, and to watch the yachts as they squeeze into their tiny mooring space wedged in-between two other multi-million dollar superyachts; the captains have nerves of steel! By night this is the area that everyone visits to watch the sunset, as the sky turns pink, and to enjoy the nightlife around the harbour.
If you are looking for a beautiful beach to visit, look no further, you have the stunning Pampelonne Bay just to the east of St Tropez. The popular Nikki Beach Bar is located at Ramatuelle with its reputation for excellent food, music and great fun; this highly fashionable bar is frequented by jetsetters who love lounging around on giant beds on this beautiful Cote d’Azur beach.
